Kingdom of Tonga accedes New York Convention

On 12 June 2020, the Kingdom of Tonga became the 164th country to accede the New York Convention. The New York Convention will enter into force for the Kingdom of Tonga on 10 September 2020.

The United Nations Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards of 1958 (“New York Convention”) is the cornerstone of international arbitration and a key rea-son why arbitration has become the most popular method of resolving international commer-cial disputes all over the world. It requires courts of contracting states to recognize and enforce arbitral awards made in other states. On 12 June 2020, the Kingdom of Tonga became the 164th country to accede the New York Convention. The New York Convention will enter into force for the Kingdom of Tonga on 10 September 2020.
